note

When moving from Athens to New York for college, I carried “Greek” as a label that was supposed to explain something about who I was. But I often struggled to feel like I fully embodied it. As I got to know my peers, I noticed that this feeling was not mine alone. I listened to stories about the cultures they had grown up in — the languages spoken at their kitchen tables, the traditions that structured their years and holidays, the places they longed to visit, and home-cooked meals they missed the taste of. In these exchanges, I realized that the act of reaching over cultural and linguistic differences — the act of trying to make someone understand what feels native to you — is a kind of storytelling, and also a kind of care.

Rosetta began in the spirit of these conversations. The magazine is devoted to exploring the textures of multilingual and multicultural life, not only through translation, but through storytelling, personal narrative, art, and scholarship that expresses the feeling of living in between places and languages, or the feeling of belonging to more than one. In our inaugural issue you’ll find careful translations, creative reflections that embrace hybridity, and essays that trace the intellectual and emotional labor of living between tongues.

My deepest thanks to everyone who made this issue possible — with your words, your curiosity, and your trust. We hope to see you in our issues to come.
